There’s no question that down the Heritage Corridor, you can find some of the most unique shops in the Chicagoland area. One that truly stands out is a local gift shop in Ottawa, IL known as Jobst Monument & Gifts.

This family-owned business has been around since 1903 and passed down through generations. It is currently run by owner Char Bragg who has been keeping things running smoothly, despite a global pandemic.

The business started with only monuments, and over time has grown to include a beautiful selection of lawn & garden décor, and wonderful gift items at a variety of prices. This ivy-covered building was built in the late 1800s with brick from the old Lincoln School, and they still have the original floors.

With so much history, the location of the shop is important. “Our family and business have been here for over 100 years. We find Ottawa a wonderful community, with much beauty, great history and much to offer visitors and residents alike,” says Char.

Not only can you find fun gifts, Jobst also offers items surrounding death of a loved one. Having a business with two distinctive sides, Char comes across all sorts of visitors from many walks of life. Whether they are dealing with happy or sad times in their lives, Char works hard to accommodate each of her customers as best as she can.

When you visit Jobst, Char and her staff do a great job making you feel welcomed, valued and satisfied. “It’s an honor and privilege to run a business that meets the needs in our community,” she says.

During the pandemic, Char had to temporarily close the doors of her business for several months. Currently, they are back open but on reduced hours and staff. However, they have seen great support from their customers who have graciously worked with their hours, while still supporting local businesses. “We are so grateful for their generous support,” she says.

For the future of her business, she wants to continue to offer unique items that attract customers, so they can continue to shop with them.
