A mid-1800’s architectural wonder helped make Chicago the city it is today. The 96-mile Illinois & Michigan Canal (I&M Canal) connected the Great Lakes in Bridgeport, Chicago to the Illinois River at LaSalle-Peru, and amazingly unique towns sprung up that maintain their authentic charm to this date.

READ ON!Hello Everyone! My name is Mariah and this week’s travel lead me into the Lockport area at Hollingworth Candies.
Having a major sweet tooth that day, I was more than happy to stop by. I was able to chat with Wendy Carver and her mother Margaret Carlson about their business.
Hollingworth Candies specializes in handcrafting toffees and chocolate candies. Founder Margaret started back in 1982 in the comfort of her own home. Along with her neighbor, she began making toffee one pound at a time for local tradeshows.
The name “Hollingworth Candies” came from her great grandfather who was looking for an English name for toffee. Once she had the name for her business figured out, things took off from there.
With all of her hard work and dedication, in 1993 she was able to open a storefront in Lockport, IL. Keeping it in the family, her daughter Wendy is now working in the business to keep things running smoothly.
When you stop by, you can see them freshly making new batched of candy right in front of you. However, you can also buy any of their tasty treats that are already neatly packaged and put away.
Their products have expanded to include sea salt caramels, the ever-popular Chesters, caramel apples, and other molded chocolates.
Let me tell you, the smell of the fresh chocolate took me away. Chocolate covered toffees are my weakness, and so I felt like I was in heaven. As mouthwatering as it was to watch, my visit got even better when they offered me a few samples to try.
I first bit into something that made my taste buds dance which was the dark chocolate pecan toffee. Three of my most favorite things in the world combined into one incredible treat. I couldn’t stop there.
I then went in for my next piece and the gooey sensation from the inside, mixed with the firm outside was delightful. It was their sea salt dark chocolate caramels, and by far my favorite! They were so good, that I bought a bag of them before I left.
So, if you are in the Lockport area, make sure to stop by and see all of what they have to offer. I promise you will not be disappointed.
